Episode 13: The Secret to Better Night Foregrounds

“It’s night, why are your photos so bright?!” I get this comment on my work often. And I get it, we go out at night, our eyes blinded by the light we were just in and everything is pitch black. We can barely make out shapes and forms, let alone see everything that is in the landscape in front of us.

But just because we can’t see it with our eyes in that moment doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. In fact, there is so much at night that can be captured with the right techniques.

The difference between images that draw you in and keep you interested and images where you scroll on by is how they are lit. And at night we get a lot of flexibility in how we do that.

To understand the best light to use we need to understand light itself and how it interacts with our camera. That is exactly what this episode does for you.

When you are done listening to this episode you will know:

  • The 3 characteristics of any type of light, why they are important, and how to apply them to all of the different lights we use at night.

  • The different lighting options we have at night and the pros/cons of each.

  • What light to choose based on what you are photographing.

  • And what my favourite type of light is to use and why!

When you finish listening, I'd love to hear your biggest takeaway from today’s episode. Take a screenshot of you listening on your device, share it to your Instagram or facebook stories and tag me. @kristinerosephotography
